What Are Projects?

Projects is a feature on claude.ai that lets you create dedicated workspaces tailored to specific themes or purposes. Regular conversations start from a blank slate each time you open a "New chat," but Projects keep background materials, past conversations, and custom instructions all in one place.

For example, if you create a project called "Marketing Strategy Planning" and upload a competitor research report, brand guidelines, and past meeting minutes, Claude will reference those materials when generating responses in every conversation.

Key Features

Knowledge Base (File Upload)

Each project allows you to upload and store style guides, codebases, interview records, past materials, and more. Each project has a capacity of 200K tokens (equivalent to about 4–5 paperback books). Uploaded files are referenced by all conversations within the project.

Custom Instructions

You can set custom instructions similar to a "system prompt" for each project. For example, once you register instructions like the following in a project, you no longer need to type them every time.

In this project, always respond in English. Responses should follow a "conclusion-first" format: state the conclusion first, then list up to three supporting reasons. For technical terms, add an explanation in parentheses upon first use.

Integration with Artifacts

When you generate code, text, or graphics within a Project, they appear as Artifacts in a panel beside the conversation. You can review and edit the output while continuing the conversation, making iterative creative work more efficient.

Available Plans

Projects is available on Pro plan and above. On the Free plan, creating Projects and saving files is restricted. On the Team plan, projects can be shared among members, and there is also a feature to share outstanding conversation examples via an activity feed.

How to Create a Project (Web UI)

  1. Log in to claude.ai and click "Projects" in the left sidebar.
  2. Select "+ New project" and enter a project name.
  3. Upload files via "Add content," or paste text directly.
  4. Enter your system instructions under "Custom instructions" and save.
  5. Then just start using it the same way you would a normal conversation.

What Is It Good For?

  • Writing: Register a style guide to maintain a consistent tone
  • Code development: Upload a codebase and ask Claude to "write code that follows this project's design principles"
  • Research & analysis: Store multiple research documents and ask questions across them
  • Team use: Register shared guidelines so every team member can use AI with the same baseline

Level 2 Complete

Congratulations. You have completed all 5 lessons in Level 2: "Getting the Most Out of Claude." You now have the knowledge needed for daily use of Claude — understanding pricing plans, writing prompts, leveraging context, and managing workspaces with Projects. Level 3: "Advanced Features" covers more powerful capabilities such as Artifacts, Computer Use, and MCP.
