Your First Conversation
Summary — Key Points of This Lesson
- A conversation with Claude starts simply by typing a message and pressing Enter (or the send button).
- The more specific your question, the more accurate the response. Adding "context, purpose, and constraints" makes it even better.
- If you're not satisfied with a response, just follow up with instructions like "be more concise" or "try a different angle."
- Conversation history is saved automatically, and you can return to past conversations from the left sidebar.
- Congratulations on completing Level 1. Next, move on to Level 2: "Making the Most of Claude."
目次 (6)
Basic Layout of the Chat Interface
After logging in, you'll see a large text input area in the center of the screen. The left sidebar shows a list of your past conversations. In the upper right, there is a model selection button where you can switch between Sonnet, Haiku, and Opus.
To start a new conversation, click "+ New chat" in the upper left or click the pencil icon.
Sending Your First Message
Click the input field to place your cursor, then type your message. Press Enter (or the send icon in the lower right of the screen) to submit. Use Shift + Enter if you want to insert a line break.
Try copying and sending the following as-is:
Please explain what Claude is in 3 sentences.
Claude will start generating a response. You'll see the text stream in real time.
How to Write Good Prompts (Basics)
Claude will answer vague questions, but there are ways to improve accuracy.
- State your purpose: "For the purpose of ~, please tell me ~"
- Provide context or audience: "For beginners" or "Written for engineers to read"
- Specify the output format: "In bullet points," "In a table," "In under 300 characters"
Providing concrete examples improves accuracy even further. This is covered in detail in Level 2: "Prompt Basics."
Refining and Deepening Responses
If a response doesn't meet your expectations, simply continue the conversation with a follow-up instruction. Claude retains the context of the conversation, so short instructions like "elaborate on the previous answer" or "rewrite that as bullet points" work just fine.
- "Be more concise" / "Go into more detail"
- "Rewrite this using a different approach"
- "Add some real-world examples"
- "Write it in English instead of Japanese"
Saving and Managing Conversations
All conversations are saved automatically. Click the left sidebar to return to past conversations. Titles are assigned automatically, but you can rename them by right-clicking (or using the three-dot menu). You can also delete conversations you no longer need.
